Ingredients packaging can delay product deterioration, maintain beneficial processing effects, extend shelf life, and maintain or improve the quality and safety of ingredients; When doing so, the ingredient packaging system can prevent three major types of external influences: chemical, biological, and physical.
Chemical protection can greatly reduce changes in composition caused by environmental influences, such as exposure to gases (usually oxygen), moisture (gain or loss), or light (visible light, infrared or ultraviolet). Many different packaging materials can provide chemical barriers. Glass and metal provide almost a barrier for chemical and other environmental factors, but few packaging is pure glass or metal because sealing devices are added to facilitate filling and emptying. The sealing device may contain materials that allow for small permeability. For example, plastic caps have a certain degree of permeability to gases and vapors, and gasket materials used to promote closure in caps and gasket materials in metal can caps allow for sealing after filling. Plastic packaging provides a wide range of barrier properties, but is usually more permeable than glass or metal.
Biological protection provides a barrier for microorganisms (pathogens and spoilers), insects, rodents, and other animals to prevent disease and decay. In addition, biological barriers maintain the conditions for controlling aging (maturity and aging). This barrier works through various mechanisms, including preventing access to the product, preventing odor transmission, and maintaining the internal environment of the packaging.
Physical protection can protect food from mechanical damage and includes cushioning against impacts and vibrations encountered during the distribution process. Usually developed from cardboard and corrugated materials, physical barriers resist impact, scratches, and crushing damage, making them widely used as transportation containers and packaging for delicate ingredients such as eggs and fresh fruits. Appropriate physical packaging can also protect consumers from various hazards.
